Kyphoplasty for Vertebral Compression Fractures

If you’ve experienced sudden back pain after a minor fall, lifting something light, or even just bending over, you may be dealing with a vertebral compression fracture (VCF). These tiny cracks in the spinal bones, often caused by osteoporosis or trauma, can lead to significant pain, posture changes, and reduced mobility.

Fortunately, there’s a minimally invasive procedure designed to stabilize the fracture, reduce pain, and even restore lost height in the spine: Kyphoplasty. At Pain & Vascular Institute, we offer kyphoplasty as part of our commitment to helping patients in the greater Chicagoland area regain function and quality of life without major surgery.

What Is a Vertebral Compression Fracture?

A vertebral compression fracture occurs when one of the bones in your spine (called vertebrae) collapses or compresses. This most commonly happens in older adults with osteoporosis, where weakened bones become brittle and vulnerable to everyday stress. In some cases, compression fractures also occur due to trauma, cancer, or long-term steroid use.

These fractures often go undiagnosed, especially if they’re attributed to “getting older” or general back discomfort. However, untreated VCFs can lead to:

  • Chronic back pain
  • Height loss
  • Stooped or hunched posture (kyphosis)
  • Difficulty walking, standing, or performing daily tasks

What Is Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive spinal procedure used to treat vertebral compression fractures. It works by stabilizing the collapsed vertebra and restoring height lost due to the fracture. This is done by inserting a small balloon into the fractured vertebra, inflating it to create space, and then filling that space with a medical-grade bone cement.

The result is a stronger, more stable vertebra with significantly reduced pain, and, in many cases, improved posture and mobility.

Who Is a Candidate for Kyphoplasty?

Kyphoplasty may be right for you if you:

  • Have been diagnosed with a vertebral compression fracture (recent or persistent)
  • Have moderate to severe back pain that is not improving with rest, medications, or bracing
  • Have lost height or developed a noticeable curve in your back
  • Want to avoid more invasive spinal surgery
  • Have osteoporosis or are at risk for future fractures

This procedure is often especially helpful for older adults who want fast, lasting relief from fracture-related pain while avoiding long recovery times.

What to Expect During the Procedure

At Pain & Vascular Institute, kyphoplasty is performed using live imaging in our on-site procedural suite. The entire procedure usually takes less than an hour per treated vertebra, and most patients return home the same day.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Local anesthesia and IV sedation is given to help you stay comfortable during the procedure. We avoid general anesthesia.
  2. A 1-2 mm incision is made in the back, and a thin, hollow needle is guided into the fractured vertebra under image guidance by our board certified specialists.
  3. A balloon is inserted and inflated, gently raising the compressed bone and creating a space.
  4. Once the bone is in the correct position, the balloon is removed and the cavity is filled with a medical grade bone cement.
  5. The cement hardens within minutes, stabilizing the bone and relieving pressure.

No stitches are typically needed, and the incision site is usually covered with a bandage.

Recovery After Kyphoplasty

One of the biggest advantages of kyphoplasty is the quick recovery time. Most patients:

  • Walk within hours of the procedure
  • Report significant pain relief within 24 to 48 hours
  • Resume daily activities within a few days
  • Notice improvements in posture and mobility

While you may be advised to avoid heavy lifting for a short time, there is typically no need for extended physical therapy or bracing. Our team will also work with you on strategies to prevent future fractures, such as bone-strengthening treatments or fall prevention.

Benefits of Kyphoplasty

  • Rapid pain relief: Most patients experience dramatic improvement within a few days
  • Restored vertebral height: Helps correct stooping or spinal curvature
  • Improved mobility: Many patients regain confidence in walking and daily movement
  • Outpatient procedure: No hospital stay required
  • Minimally invasive: No large incisions or lengthy recovery

For patients who have been living with pain, reduced independence, or fear of falling due to vertebral fractures, kyphoplasty can be life-changing.

When to Seek Help

Many people delay seeking treatment for back pain, assuming it’s a natural part of aging or that nothing can be done. However, sudden or worsening back pain, especially if accompanied by loss of height or changes in posture, should be evaluated right away.

At Pain & Vascular Institute, our team can perform advanced diagnostic imaging on-site to quickly determine whether you have a vertebral compression fracture. If kyphoplasty is the right option, we’ll explain every step and help you move forward with confidence.
