Vein Ablation for Varicose Veins

Veins on the legs. Varicose veins on the leg of an elderly woman.

Bulging, twisted veins on the legs can be more than a cosmetic concern. They may signal an underlying problem with circulation. And for many people, they also come with aching, heaviness, swelling, and fatigue. These are signs of varicose veins, a common condition that affects both appearance and comfort.

At Pain & Vascular Institute, we treat varicose veins not just to relieve symptoms, but to restore confidence and improve overall vascular health. One of the most effective treatments available today is vein ablation: a minimally invasive procedure that targets the root cause of varicose veins without surgery, scarring, or downtime.

Whether you’re bothered by leg pain or want to feel better wearing shorts or dresses again, vein ablation offers a safe, effective path toward healthier legs and renewed self-confidence.

What Are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that form when the valves inside the veins stop working properly. In healthy veins, one-way valves keep blood flowing up toward the heart. But when these valves weaken or fail, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to stretch, bulge, and become visible beneath the skin.

While any superficial vein can become varicose, they most commonly appear in the legs and feet, where gravity makes it harder for blood to flow upward.

Common symptoms of varicose veins include:

  • Swollen, rope-like veins visible under the skin
  • Aching, heaviness, or pressure in the legs
  • Swelling around the ankles or calves
  • Burning, itching, or cramping
  • Discoloration or thickening of the skin over time

In addition to being uncomfortable, varicose veins can affect how you feel about your appearance. Many patients tell us they’ve avoided wearing shorts, skirts, or swimwear because of how their legs look. Others are frustrated by the fatigue and discomfort that worsens throughout the day.

What Is Vein Ablation?

Vein ablation is a minimally invasive procedure used to close off damaged veins and reroute blood flow to healthier veins. By sealing the problem vein, ablation reduces pressure in the leg and improves circulation, relieving pain and preventing the formation of new varicose veins.

There are two common types of vein ablation:

  1. Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Uses heat generated by radio waves to seal the vein.
  2. Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA): Uses laser energy to achieve the same result.

Both methods are performed using a thin catheter inserted into the vein through a small puncture in the skin. The procedure is guided by ultrasound imaging and done right here in our outpatient facility at Pain & Vascular Institute.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Vein ablation is typically performed under local anesthesia and takes less than an hour. Here’s what the process looks like:

  1. We numb the area around the affected vein.
  2. A small catheter is inserted into the vein using ultrasound guidance.
  3. Radiofrequency or laser energy is delivered through the catheter, causing the vein walls to collapse and seal shut.
  4. Blood flow is naturally redirected to nearby healthy veins.

After the procedure, a compression stocking is worn for a few days to support healing and circulation. Most patients walk out of the office and return to normal activities the same day, with little to no discomfort.

Benefits of Vein Ablation

  • Quick relief from symptoms: Reduces aching, heaviness, and leg swelling
  • No scarring: Only a small puncture is made—no incisions or stitches
  • Minimally invasive: Performed in-office with local anesthesia
  • Short recovery: Resume walking and daily activities right away
  • Long-lasting results: Once sealed, the treated vein is reabsorbed by the body

And just as importantly, your legs will look better too. Vein ablation leads to visible improvements in the appearance of varicose veins, helping you feel more confident in your skin. For many patients, that means wearing summer clothes, dresses, or going to the beach without feeling self-conscious.

When to Consider Vein Ablation

Vein ablation may be right for you if you:

  • Have visible varicose veins in your legs or feet
  • Experience aching, swelling, or discomfort that worsens after standing or sitting
  • Have skin changes or discoloration near your ankles
  • Are bothered by the cosmetic appearance of your legs
  • Want to avoid surgery or downtime

While some patients try compression stockings and elevation first, these only manage symptoms. They don’t fix the root cause. If your varicose veins are getting worse, or if they’re affecting your confidence or quality of life, vein ablation offers a long-term solution.

Treating the Root Cause, Not Just the Surface

One of the most common misconceptions about varicose veins is that they’re just a cosmetic issue. In reality, they’re often a sign of chronic venous insufficiency, where poor circulation leads to pressure buildup in the veins. Left untreated, this can progress to skin damage, open sores, or even blood clots.

At Pain & Vascular Institute, we focus on both the aesthetic and medical aspects of varicose vein care. Our goal is not just to make your legs look better, but to improve how they feel and function, so you can move more freely and live more confidently.
